Twitter limits by Elon Musk cause outage

Outage and Frustration on temporary read limits Imposed on Twitter by Elon Musk:

On Saturday, Twitter experienced widespread outages and connectivity issues, leaving thousands of users across several countries unable to access the social media platform or encountering delays. The hashtags “#TwitterDown” and “Rate Limit Exceeded” quickly became top trending topics in the United States, with the former accumulating over 40,000 tweets by noon.

Reports of the outage started emerging around 8 am EST, according to DownDetector, and steadily increased throughout the morning. By noon EST, DownDetector had received more than 7,400 outage reports regarding the website. Users noted that their feeds were not loading and displayed an error message stating, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again.” Others encountered errors indicating that the site was unable to retrieve tweets.

Several hours after users began reporting these problems, billionaire owner Elon Musk took to Twitter to address the situation. Musk stated that the platform had implemented temporary limits to combat “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.” He explained that verified accounts would be limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts would have a limit of 600 posts. New unverified accounts were capped at 300 posts per day. Musk further announced that the limits would soon be increased to 8,000 tweets per day for verified users, 800 for unverified users, and 400 for new unverified accounts.

Many users expressed frustration with the connection problems they were experiencing, leading to additional trending topics such as “Wtf twitter” and “Thanks Elon” in the United States. It should be noted that just the day before, Twitter seemed to be restricting access to its platform for non-logged-in users, although it remained unclear whether this change was intentional or a glitch. The majority of the reported issues on Saturday were related to the website (44%), followed by problems reported on the app (39%).

As per reports, CNN reached out to Twitter for comment, but the platform responded with an automated poop emoji, leaving the matter unresolved.

This recent Twitter outage is not the first to occur since Elon Musk assumed a more prominent role in the company. In March, a significant disruption affected more than 8,000 users. Musk has been actively working to improve the platform, which has faced an advertiser exodus, by appointing a new CEO, Linda Yaccarino.
