Dune is a mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel.

The novel explores a feudal interstellar society, politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion.

Dune is set on the planet Arrakis, the only source of the valuable drug called melange or “spice.”

The story follows young Paul Atreides and his family as they take stewardship of Arrakis and face the struggles for control of the planet.

Frank Herbert wrote five sequels to Dune, and Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson continued the series with over a dozen additional novels.

Adaptations of the novel to cinema have been challenging, with previous attempts in the 1970s and 1984 receiving mixed responses.

The Dune universe’s names have been used for real-life features on Saturn’s moon Titan.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune and will also direct Dune: Part Two.
