A Russian fighter jet crashed during a Michigan air show, captured on video as the pilot and backseater use their ejection seats.
A retired Russian fighter jet participating in an air show in Michigan experienced a tragic crash on a Sunday afternoon, creating a shocking spectacle for the large audience, including many children.
Both occupants of the jet managed to eject safely before the aircraft plummeted to the ground shortly after 4 p.m.
However, upon impact, the plane erupted into a fierce blaze, narrowly avoiding colliding with an apartment complex in Van Buren Township.
Although the crash resulted in damage to vehicles, fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
Quick-response teams worked diligently to suppress the flames.
The incident occurred during the Yankee Air Museum’s Thunder over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport, situated between Ann Arbor and Detroit.
The aircraft in question was a MiG-23, formerly of Soviet origin and now belonging to Russia. It was engaged in aerial maneuvers at the time of the accident.
The exact cause of the malfunction that led to the ejection of the two crew members and the subsequent crash remains unclear.
Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration are conducting an investigation.
According to Randy Wimbley, a representative from the Wayne County Airport Authority, “The pilot and backseater successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash.
While it did not appear they sustained any significant injuries, first responders transported the pair to a nearby hospital as a precaution.”
Video footage captured the pilot, identified as Dan Filer in the event’s program, and the backseater deploying their parachutes, ensuring a safer descent to the ground. Several media outlets reported that the individuals were in stable condition after their rescue.
The crash site was within the parking area of Waverly on the Lake Apartments, resulting in damage to unoccupied vehicles.
Remarkably, no injuries were reported among the residents of the apartment complex or the air show attendees.
This incident follows two fatal crashes that occurred during an air show the previous month in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
One involved a midair collision between a helicopter and a gyrocopter, claiming two lives and injuring two others.
The second incident resulted in the death of two individuals when a single-engine plane crashed into Lake Winnebago.
Witnesses, including those not present at the air show but within close proximity, shared videos of the crash on social media.
They recounted hearing a loud explosion followed by plumes of dark smoke rising from the south of the airport.
The air show, celebrating its 25th anniversary over a two-day span, concluded on Sunday.
Matthew Gerick, an eyewitness at the event, recounted the surreal experience of watching the ejection followed by the plane’s descent.
